Child support payments and the right living situations are vital for providing a child with the quality of life that he or she needs to thrive. Our Orlando child support lawyers will guide you through the process of negotiation for child support, time-sharing, and custody so that you can ensure your child’s emotional and physical well-being in the least-disruptive manner. We can also help with step-parent adoption, providing guidance and service you can feel confident with.

At the law office of Goodblatt · Leo, our Orlando child support lawyers assist clients with all aspects of divorce, including child support orders. Child support is one area of divorce that couples cannot determine themselves; rather, child support must be calculated according to Florida law and approved by the judge, which means it’s important for you to be familiar with the factors courts consider when awarding child support.

Child Support Lawyers Serving Orlando

In Florida, child support is based on the parents’ combined net income after considering the number of children involved and how much time each parent will spend with the children. The paying parent’s financial obligation is calculated in proportion to the other parent’s income. For example, if the total amount of child support owed is $1,000.00 per month and the paying parent makes 70% of the parties’ combined net income, the paying parent will be obligated to pay $700.00 per month.

In addition to the parents’ income, costs such as child care and health insurance affect the amount of a Florida child support order, and in special circumstances, child support amounts may be higher or lower than the guideline amounts. A court may deviate from the guidelines amount by up to 5% for any reason, and even more than 5% for legally sufficient reasons, such as a child’s special needs, talents or high medical costs.

The Florida child support guidelines are calculated the first time child support is ordered and any time a change in either parent’s or the child’s circumstances may result in a change in the child support amount. They are also used to review the order to see if the support amount should be changed before the order is approved. Our Orlando child support lawyers can represent you at any stage in the determination of child support to make sure a fair amount is established.

In Florida, failure to pay child support can have severe consequences, including a finding of contempt and loss of driving privileges (except to go to work). If a parent is unemployed or underemployed and fails to pay child support, a court can order the parent to seek employment and/or enter a job training program. Child support frequently is withheld from a paying parent’s paycheck.

Whether you are the payer and need relief from a child support obligation, or you are the recipient awaiting unpaid child support, our Orlando child support lawyers have the experience to help you.
